...trust ANYBODY. Some years ago, this same vehicle mysteriously died on me while driving. I had it towed to a different shop in my neighborhood, and although they couldn't determine the cause, they did discover that one cylinder had 0 psi compression. I ended up getting the thing towed back to my house to investigate, and I assumed it had a bad valve. After taking the intake manifold off and peering down into the intake and exhaust ports of the head, I saw something shiny wedged in between an exhaust valve and the port. It turned out to be a hose clamp that had apparently been dropped into the intake manifold two years prior when I had my previous "go to" shop repair a coolant line that had started leaking beneath the intake manifold. I extracted the hose clamp with a magnet while hand-cranking the engine and then did a compression test, and everything was good to go. I got lucky. I saved the hose clamp as a souvenir and have never gone back to that shop.
